The strangers starts off with a romantic setting due to the rose petals, candle lights and soft music, however it soon switches when the dramatic bang on the door occurs; as well as startling the audience, this diegetic sound would also convey to this audience that this movie is a horror.
The main characters and storyline are shown in this trailer; we are shown the main male and female towards the beginning of the clip and the relationship they have - the audience would grasp they are going to be the protagonists due to the fact they both have a frame each, there is a long shot of the male standing up with his back half turned sorting out things on the table in front of him; this could suggest that he is a stereotypical male, in control and certain about what he is doing. There is then a medium close up of the female in the bath laying her head on her knees; similar to the male this shows the woman in a stereotypical way - innocent and vulnerable. The introduction of the characters helps us when trying to fathom what the storyline is; as we know they are lovers and they have decorated the place with rose petals etc, we know that they are having some sort of romantic night that is perhaps significant to them. Once the genre turns to horror, we get two wide shots of outside - one of the swing, and one of the garage; this conveys that something or someone outside is having an effect on this couple.
There are many elements that would entice the audience to go watch this movie however one thing that grabbed me when watching this trailer was the writing 'inspired by true events' being shown straight after the first bang; once I have had the shock from the noise, the fact its based on true events would scare me more. The frame that I thought was really good was the wide shot, whereby we see the woman standing on the left hand side and slowly a man/woman wearing a mask creeps out beside her without her noticing; the audience would feel scared for the woman and question as to what happens next, will she notice the person in the mask? If not, what does the masked person do?
Most of the trailer is a very subtle horror, almost teasing the audience whereby no full violence is shown, until we come to the frame where the axe is slammed through the door and the woman screams, the pace becomes much quicker which would create a sense of anxiety and rush throughout the audience.
